Some ghosts are said to only appear at certain times of the year and there are many tales of spooky phenomena across Scotland.
One might think that ghosts only appear in special 'haunted places' like castles, but many are said to be popping up across Scotland. Interestingly, many spirits can only be observed at certain times of the year.
Following February's tales of vengeful clan members and visions of Mary Queen of Scots, March has equally compelling stories.
The Paranormal Database has compiled a list of ghosts across the UK that are believed to only appear in the third month of the year.
Read on for a look at some of the ghosts you could see in Scotland this month if you're in the right place at the right time.
The School Teachers Murder
First of all, if you are in Loch Assynt near Lochinver in Sutherland on March 11th you may hear some frightening and inexplicable noises. Each year, a murdered salesman is expected to re-enact his brutal death at the hands of a debt-ridden teacher desperate for gold.
Those walking along the lake shore can hear the crash of a sudden fall, footsteps, the dragging of a body, and the thud of a corpse being thrown into the water.
The Mermaid of Assynt
Another terrifying paranormal story related to the lake involves the "Mermaid of Assynt". Built in 1490, Ardvreck castle ruins on the lake shore are said to be haunted by a sad creature.
According to local legend, the chief of the clan MacLeod ran into financial difficulties while building the castle. Desperate to have a magnificent home worthy of his position, he has struck a deal with a mysterious stranger who has agreed to fund the entire operation in exchange for the leader's soul.
After accepting these conditions, he quickly realised that he himself was dealing with the devil. In desperation, he negotiated a new deal that would allow him to keep his soul, but the devil wanted his daughter Eimhir's hand in marriage.
The castle was built in a few days, and when it came time for the devil to claim his reward, Eimhir learned the truth. Preferring death to living with the devil, he ran to the top of his newly built castle and leaped from the tower into the icy waters of Loch Assynt.
Although Eimhir was presumed dead, her body was never found and locals believe she turned into a mermaid to hide from the devil in the lake. There have been many reports of visitors hearing screams on the shore, and it is said that whenever the water level rises, it is because of Eimhir's tears.
The Misty Figure
Another ghost that appears to have surfaced in Scotland this month is the mysterious Misty Figure. in Ayrshire. Visitors to St. John's Tower in the town of Ayr were able to witness a ghostly apparition on March 22nd.
Unfortunately, little is known about the mysterious grey man, although according to The Paranormal Database it is believed that he was a builder, monk or warrior.
The lack of information makes the legend all the more chilling as we can only imagine who this man was and the torments he endured.
If you're in the region on March 22, you can try to solve the mystery yourself.
