President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador believes he has proof of the 'mystical' creatures

Andrés Manuel López Obrador took to social media at the weekend and shared a pair of pictures in an attempt to prove the existence of elves, claiming the discovery was proof that 'everything is mystical'.

In a bizarre Tweet published on February 25th, Lepez Obrador - who is certainly no stranger to eccentricity - posted up what he seemingly believed was genuine evidence of a mythical creature.

His Twitter post included two images - one of a strange creature in a tree that he claimed had been captured on camera by an engineer three days earlier and a second of a Mayan sculpture.

The President of Mexico compared that shot with an ancient stone carving of an Alux and was sure that they were depictions of the same thing. These particular types of elves are known as 'Aluxes', which according to Mayan mythology is a knee-high sprite which is normally invisible.

It wasn't long before other social media users pointed out that the image of the alleged creature had previously appeared online two years ago and was not thought to be genuine.

One person said the creature in the picture was 'a raccoon with a bag on its head' while another said the president was 'making a fool of himself every day'.

Since originally being posted almost seven million people have seen the tweet, though how many of them came away convinced of the existence of elves is unclear.
